Functional training for new quality control inspectors at Penumbra had historically been delivered informally: experienced QC inspectors trained new trainees one-on-one, without standardized materials, consistent structure, or any guarantee that every trainee received the same foundational knowledge. The Quality Training Team recognized the risk that approach posed to product quality and consistency, and set out to formalize it.

I collaborated with the Quality Training Team and a Technical Illustrator to transform that institutional knowledge into a structured, scalable training program. Starting with recorded footage of actual 1:1 training sessions, I analyzed the content, designed a standard module template, and developed 11 training modules spanning three unique product categories. 

These modules are now delivered by Quality Training Specialists to QC inspector trainee classes, replacing ad hoc mentorship with consistent, repeatable instruction that can scale as the team grows.

Penumbra's manufacturing process trainers collect and store excess materials and rejected products to use for hands-on practice when they're training new hires. When the company decided to begin formally tracking these materials on the electronic device history record (eDHR) in the manufacturing execution system (MES), it introduced a new workflow in an application that line leads already use every day.

I partnered with the Manufacturing Training Team and MES SMEs to design and develop a job aid for this new workflow.

This short video was created as a timed skills exercise. I shot, edited, and produced the 2-minute video independently in 3 days, from concept to final cut.

It breaks down the process of making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich into a clear, step-by-step visual sequence, using only on-screen text call-outs and no narration. The assignment focused on 3 things: clear instructions, safe work practices, and quality control. In other words: a sandwich, taught the way you'd teach a manufacturing process.
